The Delhi government's proposed electric vehicle (EV) policy mandates that only electric two-wheelers will be registered from 2028. However, recent data from the Vahan database of the Union Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) reveals that only 7% of new two-wheelers sold in the past two fiscal years were electric, with 68,275 out of 1,011,132 total registrations being EVs. The data indicates a gradual increase in electric two-wheeler sales, with 27,243 EVs registered in 2024-25 and 41,032 in 2025-26. Despite this growth, the majority of sales are attributed to commercial use, particularly in delivery fleets, rather than individual consumers. To facilitate the transition, the government is enhancing charging infrastructure and providing incentives to encourage adoption. However, officials acknowledge that the current pace of adoption is insufficient to meet the 2028 target, emphasizing the need for rapid market and behavioral changes to reduce vehicular emissions, which are a major contributor to air pollution in Delhi.
