Chandigarh's Tribune Chowk flyover project is finally moving forward after nearly seven years of delays. The proposal has been submitted to the Union Ministry of Road Transport and Highways for approval, with construction expected to start in May 2024. The flyover is designed to ease chronic traffic congestion at Tribune Chowk, which sees approximately 1.5 lakh vehicles daily. Originally estimated at ₹137 crore (roughly $16.5 million USD) in 2019, the project cost has escalated to ₹200 crore (approximately $24 million USD) due to procedural delays, including a stay by the Punjab and Haryana High Court on tree cutting. The court lifted the stay on April 30, 2024, allowing the project to proceed. In addition, the Chandigarh administration has allocated ₹6.5 crore (approximately $780,000 USD) for the elimination of a level crossing in Baltana, and construction of a hostel block at Punjab Engineering College is also set to begin in May.
