The National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) released data indicating that Delhi experienced a surge in crime rates in 2024, particularly following the implementation of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) on July 1, 2024. This new legislation replaced the Indian Penal Code and introduced various crime categories. Notably, Delhi recorded five mob lynching cases, the highest among metro cities, while Chhattisgarh led among states with 22 cases. The NCRB report highlighted that Delhi had 180 organized crime cases, ranking second among all states and Union Territories, with Andhra Pradesh at the top with 343 cases. Additionally, Delhi reported 1,058 rape cases, the highest in the country, and 13,396 crimes against women. The BNS also defined new offenses, including petty organized crime, but all metro cities reported zero cases under the new section criminalizing child involvement in crimes. The data underscores the ongoing challenges of crime in the capital, despite the introduction of new legal frameworks.
