Carmakers in India began the fiscal year 2026-27 on a robust note, achieving estimated sales of 450,000 passenger vehicles in April, a 27% increase compared to 354,000 units sold in April 2025. Maruti Suzuki India led the charge with record sales of 191,122 units, up from 142,053 units a year earlier. The growth was significantly driven by the popularity of small cars, which saw a 74.4% increase in sales. Tata Motors reported sales of 59,000 units, reflecting a 30.5% increase, while Hyundai recorded a 17% growth with 51,902 units sold, marking its highest sales for April since its inception. Other manufacturers like Kia, Toyota, and Renault also reported positive sales figures, with Kia achieving a 16% increase and Toyota a 21% rise. The favorable market conditions, including the implementation of GST 2.0 and a reduction in repo rates, have contributed to this growth. However, Maruti Suzuki cautioned that any increase in petrol prices could impact future demand.
