Punjab, India, achieved a historic milestone in tax revenue with a Goods and Services Tax (GST) collection of ₹2,987.4 crore in April 2023, as announced by Finance Minister Harpal Singh Cheema. This figure marks a remarkable 70.70% year-on-year increase, translating to an additional ₹1,129 crore compared to April 2022. The state has been recognized as the highest-growing state in the country, significantly surpassing the national growth average. Cheema attributed this success to rigorous administrative measures, including intensified enforcement activities and the use of data analytics, which resulted in penalties exceeding ₹175 crore. The government executed a notable anti-evasion operation in the iron and steel sector, detaining nearly 200 vehicles in a single day. The Punjab government, led by Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann, is committed to enhancing revenue while ensuring a fair taxation system for compliant taxpayers.
