Carmakers in India kicked off the fiscal year 2026-27 with a robust performance, selling an estimated 4.5 lakh passenger vehicles in April 2026, reflecting a 27% increase from 3.54 lakh units sold in April 2025. Maruti Suzuki India led the charge with sales of 1,91,122 units, a record for the month, driven by a 74.4% increase in small car sales. The company is currently managing 1.65 lakh pending bookings and is ramping up production to meet demand. Other notable performers included Tata Motors with 59,000 units sold, Mahindra & Mahindra at 56,331 units, and Hyundai Motor India achieving its highest April sales at 51,902 units. Kia India also reported a 16% growth, selling 27,286 units, driven by strong demand for its models. The growth is attributed to favorable economic policies, including GST 2.0, income tax relief, and lower repo rates, which have collectively boosted consumer confidence and spending in the automotive sector.
