The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has approved a plan costing ₹23.31 crore to sterilize 33,671 stray dogs over the next three years as part of its Animal Birth Control (ABC) program. Since 2017, more than 1.53 lakh stray dogs have been sterilized to help control their population and mitigate human-animal conflict in Mumbai, Maharashtra, India. However, the decision has sparked a debate among corporators regarding the reliability of data and the implementation of the plan. Concerns were raised by corporators such as Yashwant Killedar from the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) about the methodology used to determine sterilization figures and the appropriate age for the procedures. Additionally, Dr. Saeeda Khan from the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) pointed out issues with public health infrastructure, specifically the limited availability of anti-rabies vaccines in civic hospitals. BJP corporator Rakhi Jadhav emphasized the need to address the increasing incidents of stray dog attacks, calling for further discussions on the matter. The ABC program, initiated in 1994, has sterilized a total of 4,34,529 stray dogs as of August 2025.
