The Brihanmumbai Electric Supply Transport (BEST) Undertaking is set to procure 500 new 9-metre-long CNG buses to improve urban mobility in Mumbai, particularly in crowded areas like Bhandup, Powai, Vikhroli, and Kanjurmarg. This decision comes after two accidents involving larger 12-metre-long electric buses, highlighting the need for smaller, more maneuverable vehicles. BEST aims to enhance last-mile connectivity to metro stations with these new buses, which are easier to navigate in congested streets. Sonia Sethi, general manager of BEST, indicated that the initial plan for 200 CNG buses has been expanded to 500 due to the pressing need for better transport solutions. The transport body is also seeking additional funding from the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) and state government to support this initiative, which requires approximately ₹40-50 lakh (around $48,000 to $60,000 USD) per bus. The overall goal is to increase the fleet size from 2,700 to 5,000 buses by the end of the financial year, contingent on securing necessary financial aid and timely delivery from manufacturers.
