The Gurugram district Health Department has expressed alarm over misleading social media videos that falsely associate the Human Papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine with infertility and other health issues. This misinformation is reportedly reducing vaccine uptake and causing anxiety among parents and teenage girls. Since the nationwide immunization campaign commenced on February 27, only 704 girls aged 14 have received the Gardasil-4 HPV vaccine, which protects against four variants responsible for nearly 90% of cervical cancer cases. To combat this, the Health Department is organizing workshops for school principals and awareness campaigns through Accredited Social Health Activists (ASHA). Dr. JP Rajliwal, the district immunization officer, emphasized the importance of HPV vaccination for early cervical cancer prevention. The department has set a goal to vaccinate 30,000 girls by May 31. A task force meeting will convene to discuss a coordinated approach to address the misinformation and promote the benefits of the vaccine.
