In response to increasing complaints regarding smart meter billing and abrupt disconnections, the Uttar Pradesh government has implemented new consumer-friendly measures. Effective from May 8, the Uttar Pradesh Power Corporation Limited (UPPCL) has mandated that consumers using smart meters will now receive bills with a due date of at least 15 days from issuance. If payment is not made by the due date, a seven-day grace period will follow before disconnection actions are initiated. The UPPCL has also directed that consumers receive regular updates about bills and recharges via SMS and WhatsApp alerts. Additionally, special camps will be organized between June 15 and June 30 to resolve billing disputes and smart meter issues. Consumers with pending dues until April 30, 2026, can opt for payment in three instalments of 40%, 30%, and 30%. These measures aim to enhance the consumer experience and address the challenges faced since the rollout of smart meters in various districts.
