On April 17, the Allahabad High Court ruled that landlords cannot be denied a fresh electricity connection due to a tenant's alleged electricity theft. A bench of Justices Arindam Sinha and Satya Veer Singh stated that a landlord in settled possession is entitled to an electricity connection, emphasizing that the actions of a tenant do not automatically make the landlord liable. The court directed the Uttar Pradesh Power Corporation Limited to provide the landlord with a connection, underscoring that the supply company must pursue the tenant for any outstanding dues. This decision aligns with previous rulings, reinforcing the principle that access to electricity is essential for life, as recognized under Article 21 of the Indian Constitution. The court ordered that the landlord's application for a new connection be processed within two weeks, with the connection charges solely to be paid by the landlord.
