Bihar's North Bihar Power Distribution Company Limited and South Bihar Power Distribution Company Limited are nearing completion of a significant project to link 22.2 million electricity consumers with their respective distribution transformers. This initiative aims to combat power theft, enhance energy accounting, and improve demand forecasting. The process involves utility personnel visiting households to photograph electricity meters and digitally tag consumers with the transformer supplying their power. Smart meters will also be installed to monitor electricity flow accurately. Rahul Kumar, managing director of the discoms, stated that this project will help identify discrepancies between the power supplied and the billed consumption, thereby pinpointing areas of power pilferage. As of now, around 75% of transformer meter installations in Patna have been completed. The project is expected to create a real-time database of electricity demand, allowing for better load forecasting and management. The North Bihar and South Bihar discoms have already seen a decline in aggregate technical and commercial (AT&C) losses, reducing them to 14.5% and 17% respectively in 2024-25, down from approximately 20% the previous year. Provisional estimates suggest AT&C losses could further decrease to 13.54% in 2025-26.
