The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has opened a case regarding alleged irregularities in the operation of night shelters in Delhi, managed by the Delhi Urban Shelter Improvement Board (DUSIB). The investigation, which began with a preliminary enquiry in May 2022, revealed that the shelter management authority (SMA) engaged fictitious employees who never worked at the shelters. These individuals were falsely recorded as caretakers and sweepers, with salaries credited to their accounts and subsequently withdrawn in cash by those managing the shelter operations. The First Information Report (FIR), made public recently, names Suhail Khan (president of the Sofia Educational and Welfare Society), along with two private individuals, Amir and Sonu Kushwaha, and unknown public servants. The FIR indicates a systematic effort to misappropriate government funds through fraudulent documentation and highlights the failure of DUSIB officials to conduct proper inspections and report discrepancies. This case underscores significant issues in the oversight of public services in the national capital.
