On May 2, mobile phones across India beeped simultaneously as part of a trial for the government's new disaster alert system. The alert message stated: ‘Extremely severe alert! India launches Cell Broadcast using indigenous technology for instant disaster alerting service for its citizens. Alert citizens, safe nation. No action is required by the public upon receipt of this message. This is a test message. - Government of India.’ The Department of Telecommunications (DoT), in collaboration with the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) and the Ministry of Home Affairs, is overseeing this initiative. The DoT urged citizens not to panic, clarifying that the alert was simply a test and that no action was needed. A similar test was conducted in February this year, where users also received a “Test Alert” notification. The goal of this system is to ensure timely communication during critical situations, improving public safety during disasters.
