On Saturday, India launched SACHET, an innovative Cell Broadcast messaging system aimed at providing immediate disaster alerts to its citizens. Developed using indigenous technology, SACHET operates based on the Common Alerting Protocol (CAP) and is designed to function during emergencies such as natural disasters and man-made crises. The system sends alerts via SMS to mobile users within geo-targeted areas, ensuring rapid communication without the need for internet connectivity. Currently operational across all 36 states and Union Territories in India, SACHET has already facilitated the dispatch of over 134 billion SMS alerts in 19 languages. The alerts are transmitted through cellphone network towers, allowing for the delivery of messages to billions of users in a matter of seconds. To enhance its effectiveness, the government has introduced a Cell Broadcast (CB) system, which will enable real-time alert delivery to all mobile devices within a defined geographic area. Citizens can manage their alert preferences through their mobile device settings or by downloading the SACHET mobile application, which also provides timely weather updates. This initiative marks a significant step in improving disaster communication and ensuring public safety across the nation.
