The Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) has approved a controversial proposal to grant a monthly fuel allowance of ₹50,000 to its office-bearers and senior officials. This decision, made by the standing committee on March 1, is set for final approval during a general body meeting on May 15. Critics, including local residents and civic activists, have raised concerns about the appropriateness of such a high allowance, especially in light of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's calls for fuel conservation and reduced travel. The proposed allowance could cover approximately 450 to 500 litres of fuel, allowing for travel of around 9,000 to 10,000 kilometres each month, or nearly 300 kilometres daily. Detractors argue that this excessive allowance contradicts the corporation's claims of financial distress, as it continues to impose higher taxes and charges on citizens. However, PCMC officials, including Standing Committee chairman Abhishek Barne, assert that the new allowance aims to reduce overall expenditure compared to current spending on official vehicles, which exceeds ₹1 lakh monthly. Despite the backlash, officials maintain that the allowance is necessary for their extensive travel needs related to civic duties.
