Diljit Dosanjh, the popular Punjabi singer-actor, acquired United States citizenship in 2022 and has since been traveling on a US passport. Reports indicate that he is no longer an Indian citizen and has been visiting India on an e-visa. This revelation comes amid speculation about his potential entry into Punjab politics, following a public appeal from a civil society group, Jaago Punjab Manch, urging him to take a leadership role in the state. However, Dosanjh firmly rejected these suggestions, expressing his contentment in the entertainment industry. Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann claimed that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is pressuring him to enter politics, especially after the success of actor-politician C Joseph Vijay in Tamil Nadu. Should Dosanjh reconsider a political career, he would first need to regain Indian citizenship, which involves fulfilling residency requirements outlined in the Indian Citizenship Act. Additionally, Dosanjh has faced controversies regarding pro-Khalistan protests during his concerts in Canada, where he confronted flag-waving protesters, labeling attempts to disrupt his performances as a “fake narrative.”
