Punjab Governor Gulab Chand Kataria has voiced serious concerns regarding the state's law and order situation, describing it as 'not satisfactory' due to frequent incidents of contract killings, gang wars, and extortion. In an interview, he noted that these issues have created a climate of fear among residents. Despite these concerns, Kataria commended the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government, led by Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann, for its anti-drug initiative, 'Yudh Nashian Virudh', launched in March 2022, which he claims has led to a decrease in drug availability. On the contentious anti-sacrilege law, he expressed support for stricter penalties for desecration of Sikh scriptures but acknowledged the need for potential amendments following objections from Sikh clergy. Additionally, Kataria raised alarms about rising conversions to Christianity in Punjab's border areas, suggesting that this trend could alter the region's demographics. He urged the state government to consider implementing an anti-conversion law similar to those in other states. This sentiment aligns with Union Home Minister Amit Shah's previous statements indicating that an anti-conversion law would be a priority for the BJP if they gain power in the upcoming assembly elections.
