The Gurugram Metropolitan Development Authority (GMDA) announced on Tuesday that it has successfully desilted 45 kilometers of surface drains along major roads in Gurugram, Haryana, as part of a proactive measure to prevent waterlogging during the monsoon season. This initiative is part of a larger effort to clean a total of 120 kilometers of drains across various sectors from 1 to 57. GMDA officials stated that the remaining 75 kilometers will be desilted before the monsoon arrives. The operation involved over 250 workers and the deployment of more than 20 earthmoving machines, dumpers, and trolleys. The cleaning efforts focus on vulnerable areas, including stretches from Sector 46 to Subash Chowk and Hero Honda Chowk to Basai. Amit Godara, the executive engineer of GMDA, indicated that a three-pronged strategy is being adopted, which involves diverting rainwater to green belts, creating more ponds, and ensuring efficient drainage into surface drains. The collected silt is expected to be repurposed for constructing a bundh near Najafgarh drain, enhancing urban infrastructure while preparing for the monsoon.
