According to the latest Accidental Deaths and Suicides in India (ADSI) 2024 report, suicides among farmers and farm labourers have shown a slight decline. In 2024, 4,633 farmers and 5,913 farm labourers died by suicide, marking a 1.2% and 3% decrease, respectively, compared to the previous year. The total number of suicides related to farming decreased to 10,546 from 10,786 in 2023. The report attributes these tragedies to various factors, including family issues and financial indebtedness. A Situational Assessment Survey (SAS) conducted by the National Statistical Office (NSO) revealed a troubling trend: income from crop production has fallen from 47.9% in 2012-13 to 37.7% in 2018-19, while income from wages has risen significantly, indicating a shift in the economic landscape of agricultural households. The All India Rural Financial Inclusion Survey (NAFIS) 2021-22 further supports this trend, showing that the share of cultivation in average monthly income dropped from 35% to 20%. Experts caution that without adequate wage growth, the distress among farming households could escalate, potentially leading to more suicides in the future.
