A plane carrying evacuees from the MV Hondius, a cruise ship linked to a hantavirus outbreak, landed in Amsterdam, Netherlands, on Wednesday. The World Health Organization (WHO) reported that three people died from the virus, which is typically transmitted through infected rodents. WHO chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus emphasized that the outbreak is not comparable to the COVID-19 pandemic and stated that the global risk remains low. The ship, which had set sail from Ushuaia, Argentina, on April 1, had a total of 88 passengers and 59 crew members on board. The WHO confirmed that emergency crews evacuated two sick crew members and one contact case. The disease is rare and less contagious than COVID-19, leading health officials to downplay fears of a wider outbreak. The ship is expected to dock in Tenerife, Canary Islands, where remaining passengers will be flown back home if their health permits.
