Amreen Rai, a 50-year-old homemaker, allegedly hired gangsters to murder property dealer Chamanpreet Singh, also known as Cheeni, after losing ₹8 crore (approximately $970,000 USD) in a land transaction. The incident occurred on March 18, when Singh was shot dead outside a gym in Sector 9. Rai, who comes from an affluent family with connections to law enforcement, had attempted to purchase agricultural land but was misled about the terms of the deal. After failing to recover her investment, she reportedly sought revenge. Rai's connection to the plot was uncovered following the arrest of Harshpreet Singh Bains, a fellow gym-goer who allegedly facilitated her contact with gangsters. This case is notable as it is uncommon for civilians to orchestrate contract killings in Chandigarh, typically a domain reserved for gang rivalries. Rai is currently in police custody as investigations continue.
