A Bengaluru-based accountant fell victim to a visa consultancy scam, losing ₹4.3 lakh (approximately $5,200 USD) while seeking a logistics job in the United States. The victim, who approached the consultancy in Rajajinagar in September 2025, was assured by representative Mamatha Shankar that all arrangements for his job, visa, travel, and accommodation would be handled. After paying an advance of ₹50,000 followed by ₹3 lakh via RTGS, he was asked for an additional ₹80,000 for flight arrangements. He departed from Bengaluru in November 2025 but was informed upon arrival in Yerevan, Armenia, that no job had been secured. Instead of a logistics position, he was offered low-wage construction work, which he declined. Left stranded, he faced hardships and had to fund his return to India. Upon his return, he filed a complaint with the Vishwanathapura Police Station against Shankar and her associate Syed, leading to a police investigation under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023. Authorities are warning job seekers to exercise caution and verify the legitimacy of consultancies before making substantial payments.
