The Chandigarh municipal corporation's General House meeting on Thursday erupted in heated discussions over the failure to clear legacy waste at the Dadumajra site. Councillors from various parties questioned the delays, with Mayor Saurabh Joshi stating that if the four agencies responsible for waste bioremediation do not meet the new deadline of May 31, they will be blacklisted. The project has seen multiple missed deadlines and has cost the city ₹200 crore (approximately $24 million USD) so far. Councillors criticized the slow progress, citing a third mountain of waste that has emerged due to ongoing dumping. The first mountain, consisting of 5 lakh metric tons (MT), was cleared by December 2022, while the second mountain of 8 lakh MT has faced repeated extensions, now expected to be completed by February 2025. The situation has led to accusations of corruption against the ruling party, with placards displayed during the meeting. Advocate Amit Sharma, who has filed a petition regarding the matter, noted that the municipal corporation has repeatedly failed to fulfill its assurances to the Punjab and Haryana High Court regarding waste processing.
