The Chandigarh municipal corporation is stepping up its oversight of street vending zones to ensure compliance with the Street Vendors (Protection of Livelihood and Regulation of Street Vending) Act, 2014. On Wednesday, Joint Commissioner Himanshu Gupta led an inspection across various sectors including IT Park, Sectors 7, 8, 9, 10, and 11, accompanied by officials from the enforcement wing and social development. The inspection emphasized the need for essential services such as safe drinking water and the maintenance of public toilets. The engineering wing was instructed to guarantee uninterrupted water supply and maintain high sanitation standards in all vending areas. Gupta also assessed operational challenges, the effectiveness of vending layouts, and safety concerns related to lighting. Feedback on cleanliness and accessibility was collected from customers present at the sites. To streamline operations, the enforcement wing was tasked with ensuring that only authorized vendors operate in designated spaces, preventing encroachments in non-vending areas to facilitate pedestrian movement. Additionally, Vivek Trivedi, the social development officer, educated vendors about various government schemes and encouraged adherence to hygiene practices under the Swachh Bharat Mission.
