In a pioneering ecological effort, the Panvel Municipal Corporation (PMC) has launched a biological-control campaign to address the invasive Salvinia molesta weeds choking Vadale Lake, one of the oldest and ecologically significant lakes in Panvel, Maharashtra, India. The PMC released cyrtobagous salviniae weevils, which exclusively feed on the invasive weed, to restore the lake's ecological balance. Spanning nearly 25 acres, Vadale Lake is approximately 400 years old and serves as an important habitat for local and migratory birds, fish populations, and supports biodiversity. The rapid spread of the Salvinia molesta weed has severely impacted the lake, reducing oxygen levels and threatening aquatic life. Activists, including Jyoti Nadkarni, have urged the PMC to adopt sustainable methods rather than relying solely on mechanical removal, which has proven ineffective. The initiative is being conducted in collaboration with the Indian Council of Agricultural Research and the ICAR-Directorate of Weed Research in Jabalpur. Results from the weevil release are anticipated within 15 to 18 months, with visible improvements expected in the lake's ecosystem.
