In light of the potential impacts of El Niño on the monsoon season in Maharashtra, Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has directed officials to expedite the completion of 34,000 ongoing water conservation projects by June 15. During a review meeting on the Jalyukt Shivar Abhiyan 2.0 initiative, Fadnavis emphasized the need to focus on areas with depleted groundwater levels. Officials reported that 1,435 water bodies had undergone desilting, resulting in the removal of 477.73 lakh cubic metres of silt and restoring 30,835 thousand cubic metres of water storage capacity. Additionally, 73,417 acres of land have become more fertile due to the application of nutrient-rich silt. The state has allocated ₹390 crore to support these conservation efforts. Fadnavis urged for the rapid completion of works that enhance groundwater recharge and stressed the importance of including additional works in villages not currently covered under the Jalyukt Shivar scheme. He also proposed bamboo plantations along desilted drains to mitigate future silt accumulation.
