Dairy owners from the Tajpur Road dairy complex in Ludhiana, Punjab, expressed their frustration by dumping cow dung in front of the municipal corporation's office in Sarabha Nagar. This protest was sparked by the closure of a pipe linked to the 'Seechewal Model,' designed to manage overflow from the facility. The dairy complex generates approximately 4 million liters per day (MLD) of waste, while the effluent treatment plant (ETP) can only handle 2.25 MLD. The situation worsened when the system, which includes four wells for settling solid waste, was shut down, causing wastewater to overflow onto the streets. Municipal officials indicated that the dairy units are discharging more waste than the system can process, leading to direct disposal into the Buddha Nullah, which the system aims to prevent. Balbir Singh Seechewal, a member of the Rajya Sabha and project leader for cleaning the Buddha Nullah, emphasized that the dairy owners need to stop disposing of cow dung into the wells to resolve the issue. Municipal Commissioner Neeru Katyal Gupta stated that discussions with dairy owners are underway to find a solution.
