Panjab University (PU) is set to enhance its campus signage by including Punjabi alongside Hindi, English, and Braille, in response to significant student opposition. The decision follows a protest on May 11, when students, led by Ashmeet Singh, defaced newly installed signboards that did not feature Punjabi, igniting a heated debate on social media. Vice Chancellor Renu Vig confirmed that the project is being executed by the university's Equal Opportunity Cell (EOC), which focuses on making campus infrastructure more accessible to persons with disabilities. Vig noted that modifications will also be made to existing signboards to ensure Punjabi is represented. The issue gained further attention when AAP MP Malvinder Singh Kang wrote to the Vice President of India, CP Radhakrishnan, calling for immediate action to restore Punjabi's prominence, stating, 'We will not tolerate the systematic erasure of our mother tongue from our own institution.' Kang emphasized that the identity of Panjab University is closely tied to the Punjabi language, urging for its rightful place on campus signage.
