The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has initiated a study into the air pollution caused by cremations in response to multiple complaints from residents, particularly in Navi Peth, Pune, Maharashtra, India. The complaints highlight issues such as significant smoke emissions and unpleasant odors from the Vaikunth Smashan Bhoomin crematorium, which conducts a substantial number of the city's cremations. The PMC operates 75 crematoriums, with approximately 3,500 to 4,000 cremations monthly, and nearly 40% occurring at Vaikunth, which handles 35-40 cremations daily. In light of the concerns, the PMC has requested scientific data from the forensic departments of Sassoon General Hospital (SGH) and BJ Medical College (BJMC) to better understand the emissions from cremation practices and their impact on air quality. Dr. Rajesh Dighe, assistant health chief of PMC, confirmed that they have sought existing research or studies on the emissions and their contribution to air pollution. If no data is available, the PMC is interested in whether the forensic departments can conduct new research on this pressing issue.
