Recent data from Maharashtra's environment department reveals that over 19,000 of the 34,696 industrial units in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR) are categorized as moderate or highly polluting, presenting serious risks to public health and the environment. The data indicates that 8,500 units are classified as highly polluting, with pollution index scores of 60 or above. Kalyan district is particularly affected, with 7,564 of its 8,872 industrial units falling into the moderate or highly polluting categories. Environmentalist D Stalin highlighted ongoing pollution issues in the Kalyan-Ambernath-Badlapur area, despite numerous complaints and legal actions regarding pollution in the Ulhas River. In response to these concerns, Maharashtra's environment minister Pankaja Munde has initiated measures to enhance accountability among polluting industries, including plans to increase bank guarantees and penalties. A report detailing these recommendations is expected within three months, aiming to impose stricter financial liabilities on the most polluting units.
