Dairy owners at the Tajpur dairy complex in Ludhiana, Punjab, India, are expressing frustration over the Municipal Corporation's (MC) handling of cow dung management. The owners claim they are instructed to dump cow dung outside their units, worsening the already congested lanes, which are filled with dung and wastewater. Lovely Singh, president of the Dairy Union, emphasized that the lack of a biogas plant and an inadequately equipped effluent treatment plant (ETP) exacerbates the situation. With around 160 dairy units housing up to 18,000 cattle, the roads have become increasingly difficult to navigate, especially during rains when waste turns the area into a swamp. Singh pointed out that the drains are too narrow and lack proper gradient, leading to frequent overflows and direct discharge into Buddah Nullah. The MC's superintending engineer, Ekjot Singh, stated that collecting dung from inside each unit is not feasible, and dairy owners have been advised to dump it outside for collection. This ongoing issue highlights the urgent need for better waste management practices in the area.
