The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has declared a 10% reduction in water supply across Mumbai, effective from May 15. This decision is prompted by a significant decline in water levels in the reservoirs that supply the city. Currently, the seven lakes providing water to Mumbai hold 3,40,399 million litres, which is just 23.52% of the total annual requirement of 14,47,363 million litres. The BMC has indicated that the water cut will also extend to Thane, Bhiwandi, and surrounding areas. This precautionary measure is in response to forecasts of below-normal rainfall due to El Nino and Indian Ocean Dipole (IOD) conditions, as reported by the India Meteorological Department. The BMC is appealing to residents to avoid wastage and adopt water-saving habits in light of these conditions.
