Corporators in Mumbai have expressed serious concerns regarding the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation's (BMC) Mechanical and Electrical (M&E) department, alleging irregularities in major civic projects. During recent standing committee meetings, BJP corporator Makarand Narwekar criticized the ₹63-crore beautification project for Mumbai’s skywalks, claiming that the cost per metre for LED illumination was inflated to ₹96,923, while similar products were available for ₹650 per metre on the Government e-Marketplace. Narwekar accused the department of diluting tender specifications to favor select participants and noted that many lights ceased functioning shortly after installation. NCP corporator Dr. Saeeda Khan supported these claims, highlighting the department's lack of long-term maintenance planning, which leads to non-functional installations. Additionally, Shiv Sena corporator Sachin Padwal raised concerns about a ₹7-8 crore project at Cooper Hospital, questioning the procurement process for essential materials that had not been completed despite a monthly provision of nearly ₹6 lakh. In light of these allegations, Shiv Sena leader Amey Ghole has called for a special general body meeting to discuss the accountability of the M&E department, and a white paper on its operations is expected to be presented in the standing committee soon.
