The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) is considering a 40% hike in parking fees across its civic-run pay-and-park facilities, the first adjustment since 2021. The proposal, which has been approved by the Additional Municipal Commissioner (Projects), awaits the final nod from civic chief Ashwini Bhide. The existing parking rates, which expired in March 2021, have not been revised due to the COVID-19 pandemic and the dissolution of the civic house in March 2022. Currently, parking charges are categorized by vehicle type and area demand, with fees ranging from ₹10 to ₹615 per hour depending on the vehicle and location. Given Mumbai's high vehicular density, with 51.34 lakh vehicles reported by the Maharashtra government's RTO, the BMC is also planning to implement a smart parking policy to improve access to parking spaces. This initiative, estimated to cost ₹3 crore, will provide a digital dashboard of available parking through a mobile application or web portal.

The proposed parking fee hike will increase the cost of parking for residents and commuters, potentially affecting their daily expenses. With Mumbai's high vehicular density, this change may lead to increased frustration over parking availability.
