Two British nationals who disembarked from the MV Hondius during its stop at St Helena between April 22 and 24 are facing an eight-week isolation after potential exposure to hantavirus. Health authorities, including Prof Robin May from the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA), are closely monitoring the situation and have initiated contact tracing for fellow passengers who traveled with them. The outbreak has claimed three lives on the vessel, which is currently docked in the Canary Islands with about 150 people still on board. The World Health Organization (WHO) has deemed the public health risk as low, noting that the virus is unlikely to spread between individuals except in cases of prolonged close contact. The British government, led by Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper, is working urgently to facilitate the safe return of British nationals still on the ship.
