A hantavirus outbreak has emerged aboard the MV Hondius expedition cruise ship, prompting health authorities to closely monitor confirmed and suspected cases. The virus, primarily spread through contact with rodents, particularly their urine, saliva, or droppings, is believed to be the Andes virus, known for its rare human-to-human transmission. Initial symptoms of hantavirus infections mimic those of the flu, including fever, chills, muscle aches, and fatigue. These symptoms can appear one to eight weeks post-exposure. If left untreated, the infection can escalate into Hantavirus Pulmonary Syndrome (HPS), leading to severe respiratory complications and a fatality rate of approximately 35%. Another serious condition linked to hantavirus is Hemorrhagic Fever with Renal Syndrome (HFRS), which can result in kidney failure and has a death rate ranging from 1% to 15%. Passengers on the cruise ship have been confined to their cabins to mitigate further risks, while some individuals who left the ship prior to the outbreak are self-isolating. Currently, no specific vaccine or cure exists, but early medical treatment can enhance survival chances.
