Markel Lee, a 17-year-old with a prior juvenile criminal record, was arrested on Friday after turning himself in as the main suspect in a shooting at the Mall of Louisiana in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. The incident occurred around 1:22 p.m. on Thursday, resulting in the death of Martha Elizabeth Odom, a senior at Ascension Episcopal School, and injuries to five others. Baton Rouge Police Chief Thomas Morse Jr. stated that the shooting stemmed from a disagreement between two groups, emphasizing that it was not a random act. Lee has been charged with first-degree murder, five counts of attempted first-degree murder, and one count of illegal use of a weapon, and is currently held at the East Baton Rouge Parish Prison. The coroner's office confirmed that Odom died from a gunshot wound to the chest, prompting an outpouring of grief from her school community, which remembered her as a joyful presence. Police are also investigating another suspect believed to be involved in the shooting.
