A couple in their eighties and their 47-year-old daughter from Ghatkopar, Mumbai, were victims of a sophisticated cyber fraud that resulted in a loss of ₹1.1 crore. The scam began on April 5, 2023, when the elderly father received a WhatsApp call from a person claiming to be a police officer named Ranjit Kumar. The caller falsely informed him that terrorists arrested in Tamil Nadu were using SIM cards registered in his name and that he needed to travel to Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh to clear his name. The situation escalated when the caller switched to a video call with another individual in police uniform, further convincing the family of the legitimacy of the claims. Under the threat of being implicated in a serious crime, the family was coerced into transferring ₹60 lakh and later ₹50 lakh in multiple transactions to the fraudsters' accounts. The fraud was uncovered when the daughter researched the situation online and realized they had been duped. The police have registered a case against the unknown perpetrators under various sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023, and the Information Technology Act.
