A severe thunderstorm that struck Punjab, India, on Sunday resulted in significant damage to the power infrastructure, with the Punjab State Power Corporation Limited (PSPCL) estimating losses at ₹8 crore ($960,000 USD). The storm, characterized by wind speeds of 60–70 kmph and heavy rainfall, caused damage to nearly 1,200 electric poles, around 100 distribution transformers, and one 200 kV transmission tower. The worst-affected districts included Mohali, Ropar, and Ludhiana, where high winds and rain disrupted power supply for several hours. PSPCL director Inderpal Singh reported that restoration teams were deployed immediately, and while power supply has been restored in most areas, efforts are ongoing to normalize the system completely. Interestingly, the rainfall also led to a significant drop in power demand, decreasing from over 12,000 MW to 9,246 MW as temperatures fell.
