The Bombay High Court in Mumbai upheld the acquittal of 22 individuals involved in the 2005 fake encounter case of gangster Sohrabuddin Shaikh, his wife Kausar Bi, and aide Tulsiram Prajapati. A bench led by Chief Justice Shree Chandrashekhar dismissed appeals from Shaikh's brothers, who argued that the trial was flawed. The special court previously acquitted the accused, stating that the prosecution failed to prove any conspiracy or involvement of the police officers in the killings. Among those acquitted, 21 were junior police officers from Gujarat and Rajasthan. The court noted the lack of evidence linking the accused to local politicians, some of whom were also implicated but later discharged. The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) had previously accepted the acquittal and did not pursue an appeal, concluding that the prosecution's case was not established beyond a reasonable doubt. Shaikh was killed on November 26, 2005, and Kausar Bi shortly thereafter, with Prajapati being killed in another alleged encounter in December 2006.
