The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has announced a 10% water cut across Mumbai and surrounding areas, including Thane and Bhiwandi-Nizampur, starting Friday. This decision comes as reservoir levels have dropped to 3,40,399 million litres, which is only 23.52% of the city's annual requirement of 14,47,363 million litres. The cut is a precautionary measure due to forecasts from the Indian Meteorological Department predicting below-normal monsoon conditions this year, influenced by El Nino and the Indian Ocean Dipole. The BMC plans to monitor reservoir levels closely and manage daily water supply to ensure availability until mid-August. Citizens are encouraged to conserve water by adopting practices such as turning off taps when not in use and limiting household water usage. The BMC reassured residents that additional water supplies from the Bhatsa and Upper Vaitarna dams will support the city's needs during this period.
