On May 12, severe thunderstorms swept through Himachal Pradesh, India, leading to widespread destruction. The storms uprooted trees, damaged roofs of houses, schools, and cowsheds, and resulted in the loss of dozens of cattle. An orange alert was issued by the India Meteorological Department (IMD) for thunderstorms, lightning, and hailstorms in Kullu, Mandi, Shimla, and Sirmaur districts. Reports indicated that at least five houses and ten cowsheds were significantly damaged in villages such as Ghalincha and Gharyal in Kullu district. Additionally, vehicle traffic was disrupted at Jalori pass due to fallen trees, and power transmission lines were damaged in Shimla and Kangra. Tragically, a lineman was electrocuted while repairing a fault in Kangra district. The storms brought light to moderate rainfall across the state, with Bijahi in Mandi recording 50 mm of rain. The IMD forecasts continued wet weather until May 15, with potential hailstorm activity expected in certain areas.
