In a significant case of fraud, six individuals from Kharar, Punjab, have been booked by Sudhar police for allegedly duping a family from Akalgarh of ₹1.40 crore by promising permanent residency in the United States. The accused include Simran Kaur, her husband Bikram Singh, and other family members. According to the complaint filed by Karamjit Singh, a resident of Navi Abadi in Akalgarh, he sought the accused's help for immigration services. In September 2024, Simran Kaur demanded ₹35 lakh per person to facilitate the visa process for Karamjit, his wife, and two sons, assuring them that the process would be completed in two months with a full refund if the visas were not granted. The accused collected an advance of ₹5 lakh and later demanded further payments, claiming their bank accounts were frozen. By January 2025, they had allegedly collected ₹1.40 crore, leading Karamjit to take loans and mortgage property to fund the scam. Police have registered a case under relevant sections of Indian law, but no arrests have been made so far.
