The Bombay High Court in Mumbai has granted interim relief to Deepak Kochhar, halting the Enforcement Directorate's (ED) seizure of his assets valued at ₹78 crore. This decision, made by a division bench led by Chief Justice Shree Chandrashekhar, is set to be reviewed on June 19. The legal battle stems from allegations that ICICI Bank, under Chanda Kochhar's leadership, sanctioned six loans totaling ₹1,875 crore to Videocon Group companies between June 2009 and October 2012. The ED claims that a quid pro quo arrangement was established when Videocon Group chairman Venugopal Dhoot invested ₹64 crore into Deepak Kochhar's company, NuPower Renewables, shortly after these loans were approved. The ED had initially attached the Kochhars' assets in January 2020, labeling them as proceeds of crime. However, an adjudicating authority dismissed this attachment in November 2020. The Appellate Tribunal for Forfeited Property later ruled that the financial transactions constituted a prima facie case of money laundering against the Kochhars. Deepak Kochhar was arrested in September 2020 but was released on bail. Both he and Chanda Kochhar were arrested by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) in December 2022, but the Bombay High Court later deemed their arrests unlawful in a landmark ruling in February 2024.
