Delhi has achieved a remarkable milestone in rooftop solar installations, with a total of 8,596 connections recorded in the 2025-26 financial year, marking a substantial increase from 4,300 in the previous year. This growth is largely credited to government initiatives, including the PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana, which provides incentives up to ₹1.08 lakh. The two power distribution companies, BSES and Tata Power-DDL (TPDDL), reported energizing 4,585 and 4,011 connections, respectively, reflecting a strong push towards renewable energy. Delhi's power minister, Ashish Sood, emphasized the dual benefits of solar installations in reducing electricity costs and improving air quality. A typical 5 kW rooftop solar system can yield savings of over ₹3,500 monthly, with investment payback periods of 3-4 years. The Delhi Solar Energy Policy 2023 targets a total solar capacity of 4,500 MW by 2026-27, including 750 MW from rooftop systems. Experts suggest that while the current growth is promising, sustaining it will require addressing challenges like discom integration and net metering stability.
