Delhi's peak power demand is anticipated to rise significantly this summer, surpassing 9,000 Megawatts (MW), as reported by the State Load Dispatch Centre. Last year, the peak demand reached 8,442 MW on June 12, with an all-time high of 8,656 MW recorded on June 19. To address this surge, the Delhi government has outlined a Power System Master Plan, which includes a ₹17,000 crore (approximately $2 billion USD) investment over the next three years through Delhi Transco Limited and power distribution companies (discoms).
BSES, which operates in various areas of Delhi, forecasts a peak demand of 3,997 MW in its south and west regions, while the east and central regions are expected to see a demand of 1,991 MW. To meet these demands, BSES is relying on long-term power purchase agreements and advanced technologies, including artificial intelligence for accurate demand forecasting. Additionally, around 2,670 MW of green power will be crucial, with solar energy contributing approximately 840 MW. Tata Power-DDL is also enhancing its infrastructure and implementing preventive maintenance measures to ensure a reliable power supply during peak demand periods.
