The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) is set to launch hydrogen-powered shuttle buses in the Central Vista area starting Friday, in collaboration with the Union Ministries of Housing and Urban Affairs and Petroleum and Natural Gas. This initiative is part of the government's efforts to promote fuel conservation amid fluctuating global energy prices. The shuttle service will connect Central Secretariat and Seva Teerth Metro stations with key government offices, encouraging public transport use among government employees and visitors. The hydrogen fuel cell buses, which produce electricity through a reaction between hydrogen and oxygen, emit only water vapour as a byproduct. Indian Oil Corporation Limited (IOCL) has provided two buses, each seating 35 passengers and equipped with GPS tracking and CCTV for safety. The buses will operate Monday to Friday during peak office hours, with a fare structure of ₹10 and ₹15 depending on travel duration. DMRC will manage operations, while IOCL will handle drivers and fuel support. However, challenges remain in the commercial viability of hydrogen technology due to high procurement costs.
