The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) is transitioning from the conventional Metro 'One' cards to the National Common Mobility Cards (NCMC), which have gained significant popularity, comprising 92.22% of smart card sales in April 2026. In total, 3.88 million NCMC cards were sold last year, with 1.25 million issued by the end of April this year. This shift is part of the government’s 'One Nation, One Card' initiative, aimed at creating a unified mobility payment system that allows NCMC cards to be used across various transport modes, including buses and metros in different cities. Unlike the older cards that are limited to the metro network, NCMC cards can also be utilized for shopping, ATM withdrawals, toll payments, and parking transactions. The system was first introduced on the Airport Express Line in December 2020 and was fully implemented across the DMRC network by June 5, 2023. DMRC officials have noted that while the older 'One' cards will be phased out, they will remain usable for those who still possess them. The DMRC is also enhancing the promotion of NCMC cards through partnerships, such as a recent collaboration with Airtel Payments Bank to launch co-branded RuPay 'On-The-Go' cards.
