In Mumbai, autorickshaw unions are pushing for a fare increase following a recent price hike of ₹2 per kg for compressed natural gas (CNG) announced by Mahanagar Gas Limited (MGL). The new retail price of CNG is ₹84 per kg, effective from May 14. The unions, including the Mumbai Rickshawmen’s Union, argue that the increase in fuel costs—₹1.03 per km—and rising inflation justify their demand for a ₹1 hike in the base fare, currently set at ₹26. This fare calculation adheres to the formula established by the BC Khatua Committee in 2017, which is used by the Maharashtra transport department to adjust fares. The transport department plans to present these demands to the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Transport Authority (MMRTA) for consideration. MGL cited geopolitical disruptions and increased gas procurement costs as reasons for the price hike, affecting the transport ecosystem in Mumbai, where approximately 1.28 million vehicles, including 470,000 autorickshaws, rely on CNG.
